Managing our environmental impact at the Brighton Marathon Weekend
Find out what steps we are taking to manage the environmental impacts of this incredible event.
Pre event
- Our entry system offers everyone the choice of having a tree planted instead of having a Finisher T-shirt through our partnership with Trees Not Tees
- Runners can also choose to not take a medal
- Our Green travel tool (link sent out in pre-event comms) helps participants with their travel plans - highlighting the lowest carbon travel methods and offering the option to make a voluntary donation to remove the carbon associated with their travel
On the day
- The finisher’s medal is made from recycled zinc alloy
- Kitbags are made from sugarcane, a type of bioplastic that is recyclable
- Event T-shirts are made from 100% recycled polyester
- There will be tap water refill stations at each Start Area and at the Finish for both the 10K and the Marathon. Water will be available at refill points at Preston Park for the Brighton Miles too
- For the 10K there are two water refill points on the course
- At the Marathon, tap water refill is provided at five locations around the course for runners who are carrying their own container (hydration vest or hand-held running bottle)
- Our water and energy drink stations provide water in compostable cups. The cups are all collected up and send for industrial composting.
- Those who have opted out of a medal can visit our finish line Selfie Station for a special finisher’s photo opportunity
- We collect any clothing left by participants at the start area (warm-up layers) and donate this to Shelter, the housing and homelessness charity.
- Electric vehicles are used on course as lead vehicles and make up the majority of the operational vehicle fleet for this event
- Bike parking is available at Preston Park and Hove Lawns
- Generators are powered with HVO (a vegetable oil fuel that replaces diesel)
- We collect unwanted trainers (clean and with some life left in them) on behalf of JogOn to be donated to community groups and schools around the UK
- We have a Green Village as part of the Event Village at the finish – showcasing local environmental organisations.
- A team of volunteers will be running behind the marathon participants to help collect discarded gel wrappers (also known as “plogging” – jogging while picking up litter)
Play your part!
Want to keep your environmental footprint light? Here’s how…
- Use public transport to get to the event if you can – it’ll make it easier to get away when you’ve finished too as lots of roads are closed for most of the day.
- If you really need to drive, can you give someone a lift? We will send details of a car-sharing service for the Brighton Marathon Weekend to all participants.
- Use a hydration vest, bottle belt or carry a hand-held bottle or collapsible cup so that you can use our water refill points around the route. This helps to cut down on waste from single-use cups.
- If you will be wearing extra layers to keep warm at the start that you plan to drop please ensure they are clean and not full of holes! Our charity partners need them to raise money.
- Bring along those trainers that you don’t wear any more to donate to JogOn in the event village
- Along the route, please use the bins provided and don’t drop litter on the road. In this beautiful seaside city, litter can easily be blown into the sea. Help us to keep it in the bins.
