Smart open water swimming

Do:

  • Practise regularly in the pool to build your fitness
  • Swim in open water to gain confidence and experience
  • Start training early to give yourself time to adapt
  • Choose safe entry and exit points, and use visible landmarks to guide your swim
  • Wear a bright-coloured hat so you’re easy to spot in the water
  • Use a tow-float for added visibility and support if needed
  • Test your kit in advance to make sure everything fits and feels comfortable

Don’t:

  • Swim in remote or unsafe locations—always check with local swimmers for the best spots
  • Swim alone—having a buddy adds both safety and reassurance
