The Standard Chartered Great City Race celebrates 20 years in 2025.
Thousands of runners from across the corporate world will once again lace up their trainers to take on the iconic 5K route through the City of London. Among them is Will Brown, Group Head, HR at Standard Chartered.
We caught up with Will to chat about how the race is a unique opportunity to connect with colleagues, to enjoy London’s iconic landmarks, and support the Futuremakers initiative.
As Will says, the race is more than just a scenic run or a corporate fitness challenge. It's also about supporting a greater cause.
“The event is a great way to raise funds for the Standard Chartered Foundation’s Futuremakers initiative, which tackles inequality and supports disadvantaged young entrepreneurs and jobseekers, predominantly women, helping them improve their economic skills and prospects. Many of the programmes incorporate sport into their educational sessions to demonstrate the importance of teamwork and striving to succeed. It also resonates strongly with the #PlayOn campaign which was developed to help support girls stay in sport."
This year, 6000 runners are signed up to take on the 5K route alongside Will, although not without a bit of healthy competition.
“I’m particularly keen on beating my colleague Louise Brookes! We have some healthy competition going on in the team which is always a great motivator!”
While not a daily runner, Will is looking forward to the race as a fun challenge and a way to stay active.
“I wouldn’t call myself a regular runner, but I do love getting outside for a jog with my dog Benji."
Reflecting on last year’s experience, Will recalls the incredible atmosphere of the event.
“The energy was fantastic - running through the streets of the City of London with no traffic, on a warm summer evening, with the crowd cheering you on; it’s something special.”
So what advice would you give to first-time runners at this year’s race?
“Enjoy the experience! Soak in the atmosphere, connect with fellow runners, and celebrate your achievement - regardless of your time.”
As the race celebrates 20 years, it continues to grow in impact and importance - not just as a sporting event but as a symbol of community and purpose.
"The Standard Chartered Great City Race has become a key date in London’s corporate calendar. The event has grown over the years to attract thousands of participants, symbolising not only physical activity and fun but also community support, and each year the race strives to become more sustainable. 20 years of the race is a great testament to Standard Chartered’s longevity and commitment to being Here for good."
Whether you're running for fitness, fun, or Futuremakers - every step taken on Race Day helps pave the way toward a more inclusive future.
