Joe Wigfield celebrates crossing the finish line on the Mall in first place during the British Milers Club Bannister Mile

For the first time since 2019, the British Athletics One Mile Road Race Championships will be back at Westminster, with entries now open for athletes targeting sub‑4:50 (men) or sub‑5:34 (women).

The championships will be incorporated into the British Milers’ Club (BMC) Bannister Mile which has been held at the event since 2024.

Those taking to the Start Line will be bidding to join an elite club of one at the Vitality Westminster Mile to have broken the historic four-minute mile mark. Joe Wigfield dipped under that barrier in 2024 (3:58) and again in 2025 (3:59) as part of the BMC Bannister Mile. He remains the only person to run under the mark, first set by Roger Bannister in 1954, in the 12-year history of the event. The current female course record was set by Katie Snowden in 2024 (4:23).

Elaine Rayner, Event Lead at the Vitality Westminster Mile, said: “We are delighted that, for the first time since 2019, the British Athletics One Mile Road Championships will be incorporated into the Vitality Westminster Mile. There are very few opportunities for the best middle-distance athletes in the country to race over a mile on the road in the UK and the Vitality Westminster Mile provides a great platform to race against the best in the country on a fast and iconic course.”

Pacemakers will again be in use to support athletes looking to clock sub four-minutes on the course, which loops around St James’s Park. The women’s race pacemakers will aim to take athletes inside 4:20.

There will be prize money available for first (£1,000), second (£500) and third (£250) in the men’s and women’s race.

The One Mile Road Race Championships at the Vitality Westminster Mile is open to anyone eligible to compete for UK and English Championships, as well as BMC members.
