About

Discover the fast-growing game of 3v3 basketball.

Jr. NBA 3v3 is an exciting schools basketball competition delivered in partnership by the NBA and London Marathon Events.

Designed specifically for young people, it gives pupils the chance to experience competitive basketball in a format that is fast, fun and accessible for all abilities.

Played with three players on court, on a half-court with simplified rules, 3v3 basketball is easy for schools to introduce and provides more opportunities for every child to get involved. Whether pupils are experienced basketball players or trying the sport for the first time, 3v3 creates an inclusive environment where everyone can contribute and develop their skills.

Why 3v3?

Unlike the traditional five-a-side game, 3v3 is designed to maximise participation and engagement. With fewer players on court, every participant has more touches of the ball, makes more decisions, and plays a more active role throughout the game.

The format is:

  • Fast-paced and high-energy, with games lasting just 10 minutes or until the first team reaches 21 points.
  • Inclusive and accessible, making it ideal for pupils of all abilities and experience levels.
  • Easy to deliver using existing school facilities, requiring only half a court, one hoop and a basketball.
  • Focused on developing teamwork, communication, confidence and resilience through regular involvement in play.

Why Should Schools Take Part?

Jr. NBA 3v3 is about much more than winning games. It gives young people the chance to be active, represent their school, build friendships, develop life skills and create lasting memories through sport.

The format develops a wide range of physical, technical and personal skills, including:

  • Movement and coordination
  • Decision-making and problem-solving
  • Communication and teamwork
  • Leadership and confidence
  • Resilience and sportsmanship

Because every player is involved more frequently, pupils often make faster progress and gain greater confidence than in larger team sports.

No Experience Required And Free To Enter

Schools do not need specialist basketball knowledge to get involved. Free teaching resources, lesson ideas, "How To" videos and teacher development opportunities are available to support delivery. The game is simple to learn and ideal for both beginners and experienced players.

Every stage is free, including entry to the competition pathway and participation in the finals, ensuring all schools can take part.

A Clear Competition Pathway

Schools progress through an exciting tournament structure:

  1. School Entry – Schools register and select their team(s).
  2. Borough Competition – Local competitions determine borough representatives.
  3. Area Competition – Winning schools progress to area finals.
  4. Grand Finals – The top teams compete for the title of Jr. NBA 3v3 Champions and the opportunity to win gold championship rings.

A Unique NBA Experience

As pupils progress through the competition, they become part of an authentic NBA-inspired experience. Players receive event apparel and have the opportunity to compete at prestigious finals venues alongside schools from across the region.
